These are some of the books I've read recently and a little bit about each of them. If you've read an interesting book recently click here to add the book to this list. A Friend of Nikki Sunshine’s, Java Bomani A Friend of Nikki Sunshine's - is a fast paced fictional romantic thriller that lands an unsuspecting young woman smack in the middle of a modern day coup d’etat.
At14, Zinna Osani’s life began to change – for years since her mother left, she’s been taken care of by a domestic staff. Her father, Olandis, is a successful businessman, who worked hard running the family business. When her 18th birthday came around, the more he wanted his beautiful young butterfly to remain a Caterpillar, but she resisted.
In her early 20’s her father suffered an attack, leaving her to run things. She enlists the help of Tyler Wells, who in a short time turned the company into a major player in their market. 6 months later, she’s in school, Olandis begins to make a remarkable recovery, and the company is working on a product that will mean billions in profit. Since Olandis didn’t die, Tyler never got control, and now feels like he’s being cheated. He formulates a plan to change that; first he needs to get rid of Olandis and Zinna, jumpstarting a frenetic symphony of action. The only person standing in the way of their plan, is a mafia hitman named Nikki Sunshine.
High Fidelity, Nick Hornby Love the book, love the movie. Its about a "pop-music junkie who owns a semi-failing record store". Begins with his review of his 'top five break-ups' and goes onto many other 'top fives'. The guy talks to himself a lot and the book is full of his ramblings. Anyway, its a really funny book - I don't think my description is doing any justice to it! Also, About a Boy by the same author is very good (again both the movie and the book); I didn't enjoy 'How to Be Good' at all though! According to one of my friends 'Nick Hornby has flashes of brilliance'; well I don't think 'How to Be Good' had many of those flashes. The Hitchhiker's Trilogy Series, Douglas Adams This book is about the adventures of Arthur Dent who gets picked up from the planet Earth by Arthur Dent minutes before it is destroyed because it came in the way of an interstellar 'highway'. They travel through space and encounter the most bizzare collection of characters and situations ever. This book has the most hilarious quotes. Oh and I almost forget to mention here is finally a series that reveals the meaning of life, universe and everything ;-) The Light Fantastic, Terry Pratchett One of the books in the Discworld Series; Discworld being a planet that carried by a huge turtle on its shell. The book is hilarious. I didn't know a book could be this much fun before I read the Light Fantastic. One of my regrets in life is that I haven't read more Terry Pratchett books - his descriptions are the most vivid I have ever read. Veronica Decides to Die, Paulo Coelho Its about a girl who lives in mental institution and wants to committ suicide. Very inspiring book, makes you feel all refreshed and wonderful about life once you are done reading it. This is my favourite Paulo Coelho book; I like it even more than the Alchemist and some others that I've read. Discovering Relativity for Yourself, Sam Lilley The theory of relativity explained in simple words. The author promises that you don't need to know any advanced mathematics/physics to understand the theory and that he will teach whatever is required along the way; I haven't yet finished the book but so far it has lived upto its promise. You do have to unlearn a lot and go against your intuition but its well worth the effort. Complexity, Mitchell M. Waldrop A fascinating book about the "THE EMERGING SCIENCE AT THE EDGE OF ORDER AND CHAOS". Self-evolving systems, why a butterfly can cause a hurricane, how simple rules can produce complex behaviour and lots of other very interesting stuff. The Gap Series, Stephen Donaldson This is definitely one of the best science fiction series I have ever read. Its mainly about a group of individuals who take on the might of an alien species and corrupt elements within the police force governing human space. It begins with 'The Real Story' which is pretty simple and straightforward; the story gets more and more complicated and engrossing with each book. The 'heroes' of the book go through so much through the series that you'd have difficulty believing they are still alive when the story reaches its climax in the fifth and last book. There is action, treachery, love (in its most bizzare form), ultra cool technology, the most bone chilling characters and situations - you name it. |
